Principal, Buy-Side

Piper Maddox have been retained by a very quickly growing Transferable Tax Credit's SaaS startup looking to bring on a Buy-Side focused Tax Equity leader to scale their network of buyers in Corporate Investors. The market is rapidly expanding due to the transferability provisions added to the Inflation Reduction Act in 2023. As the industry continues to boom, so does the availability of these credits which leaves an incredible opportunity for a business development oriented tax credits expert to join and build something special with some of the best minds in the industry.

The team is made up of Founders & Leaders that have built, scaled and exited SaaS start-ups in the past and have experience with the DoE, massive Developers and Utilities, as well as Investors. They are surrounding themselves with some of the best and brightest Tax Equity SME's in the industry as they look to build both the best product and service in the marketplace.

They have also received nearly $30M in funding from top PE investors in both the software and energy industries, in just about 1.5 years since launch. Names such as Andreesson Horowitz, LowerCarbon Capital, Ardent, New System Ventures, Overture, Ardent Venture Partners and more as well as strategic investors including EDF Renewables, Clearway, Pattern Energy amongst others.

This role reports to the MD, Buy-Side Lead and is a fully remote position in the continental US.

  • The primary function of this role is to build, nurture and grow a book of business managing an entire customer lifecycle to scale a buyside (focusing around corp investors) that have an appetite to learn and buy renewables tax credits.
  • This is a startup and a full sales cycle role, so every person on this team must be willing to roll up their sleeves to generate leads whether through conferences, networking, cold or warm outreach and more; you must be creative, structured and hungry to do more.
  • Transferability is rather new in the world of renewables, so the knowledge of tax equity with at least 2-4 years in the renewables is a must (and ideally 8-10+ years broadly) as having the ability to educate buyers throughout the cycle of initial contact to a close of transaction is a critical element to success in this role.
  • Establishing credibility and cultivating partnerships with key stakeholders and senior leaders with corporate buyers, family offices, accounting and tax firms.
  • Services as a partner and resource to buyers from start to finish of the transaction lifecycle, while developing unique strategies to best meet their needs.
  • Work strategically with the Sell-Side to team to align buyers interests with the rapidly scaling sell-side network that has joined the platform.
  • Work with Product Development to improve platform usability and efficiency through client insights and feedback, and your own subject matter expertise.

The Right Fit

  • 7+ years of experience selling tax related financial products to the buy-side (specifically corporates and family offices) or advising on tax credit accounting methods or transaction.
  • You could have also lead structured origination or distribution of financial products related to tax equity / credits.
  • Absolute minimum of 2 years in renewables tax credits, ideally with some solar, wind or battery experience.
  • Incredible relationship builder, communicator (written and oral), presenter and really understands how to pitch to investors. There will be a sales pitch role play in the interview process.
  • A contributor to team culture and a truly authentic personality, we want to find the best minds in the industry, but the best people as well; passionate about who you are and what you do.
  • Team oriented; care for the success, happiness and health of those around you.
  • This is a fully remote role; someone that is a unparalleled self-starter, hungry to educate the industry in renewables tax credits and drive capital access in the industry is a key mindset to join this team.
