About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced Manager, BESS Origination to join a rapidly growing energy company. This role will primarily focus on developing and managing relationships with utilities in the SPP area and other regions as the company expands its portfolio into new utility-driven markets. You will be instrumental in supporting the company's standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) projects and will be the primary contact for utility-related matters across multiple energy markets, including SPP, WECC, CERC, PJM, and MISO.

Main Responsibilities:

Utility Relations & Contracting:

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of utility processes for contracting, including RFPs, bilateral agreements, distribution lists, and more.
  • Identify key decision-makers at targeted utilities and understand their preferences for BESS, including lithium versus long-duration storage and preferred contract types (e.g., tolling agreements).
  • Research and understand the appetite of utilities for BESS and other storage technologies, including knowledge of terms for capacity agreements, tolling agreements, and other related contracts.

Project Introduction & Proposal Management:

  • Introduce company projects to utilities by preparing teasers, unsolicited proposals, and RFP submissions.
  • Engage with utilities to ensure understanding of company projects and drive forward the proposal process.

Agreement Negotiations & Contract Finalization:

  • Obtain term sheets for tolling agreements and other related contracts, and assist in finalizing agreements for the company's BESS projects.
  • Support the process of negotiating and securing capacity agreements and tolling agreements with utilities across multiple regions.

Position Requirements:

  • Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience in the energy storage or renewable energy industry, particularly in BESS origination or related roles.
  • Utility Knowledge: Strong understanding of utility processes, RFPs, and contracting mechanisms. Experience with utilities' preferences for BESS, including storage duration and technology (e.g., lithium vs. long-duration).
  • Geographic Experience: Prior experience or knowledge of utility relationships in regions such as SPP, WECC, CERC, PJM, and MISO.
  • Contracting Expertise: Familiarity with tolling agreements, capacity agreements, and the process of negotiating these contracts in the energy storage and renewable energy sectors.
  • Industry Relationships: A candidate with established relationships with utilities, particularly in the Western U.S. (WECC), and knowledge of the regional energy market dynamics.

Desired Skills & Attributes:

  • Familiarity with energy storage projects, particularly in BESS, and the related utility contracting process.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in the utility sector.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills, particularly in preparing and presenting proposals and agreements to utilities.
  • An interest in traveling to conferences and meeting with utilities to foster relationships and keep up with industry developments.

Compensation:

  • Salary Range: $90,000 - $120,000 per year, based on experience and qualifications.
  • Bonus Structure: 15-20% annual bonus, based on both individual and company performance.
